Research

The American Lung Association is committed to funding cutting-edge research making better treatments and cures within reach in our lifetime and allowing future generations to enjoy healthy, full lives. Here are some of the research initiatives funded by the American Lung Association right here in Utah.

Anne Moon, MD, PhD
University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT

Growth Factor That Stimulates Air Sac Development May Help Premature Babies

Since the lungs are one of the last organs in the body to develop during pregnancy, it is common for pre-term and even full-term babies to be born with air sacs (alveoli) that are not fully developed, which can lead to infant death and long-term illness. The researchers are investigating the growth factor that stimulates normal air sac development, which could represent a major advancement in the treatment of infants with this condition. Moon's research focuses on a previously unknown molecule called Fibroblast Growth Factor 8 (Fgf8).
